Fan Bay Deep Shelter, Dover - 2014
I managed to get a trip to the shelter via work, hence all the photos are taking using a flash as I could not linger to light paint the images. I had to try and remain professional, I think I may have failed !
Fan Bay deep shelter served Fan Bay Battery during WW2 which sat atop the White Cliffs of Dover. The tunnels of the shelter lead to an unlined section that are thought to originate fromm WW1. This section probably served as shelter of men serving at the sound mirrors in the cliffs.
The National Trust plan to renovate the tunnel system and believe the sound mirrors are also still in situ under chalk that was tipped on them in the 1970's, undertaken as part of the local authorities plans to get rid of wartime structures seen as a blight on the landscape.
Fan Bay should be open to the public Spring 2015. For further information about the project go to - http://fanbayshelternt.wordpress.com
